Sometimes clicking the shutter is merely the beginning of the photographic process. Here are six variations of a recent image of my son Jett.
1. Color version cropped to portrait format.
2. Processed in black & white and then given a slight sepia tone.
3. Processed in the style of my Recent History series.
4. Cropped square and processed in the style of my Show & Tell series.
5. I printed the Show & Tell version and adhered it to a wood panel with gel medium. I then painted the photograph with acrylic and applied a heavy varnish of gloss medium. This is what it looked like right after pouring on the gloss medium, complete with air bubbles. This step requires a certain amount of courage and confidence in the process.
6. I scraped away much of the gloss medium just prior to its drying fully, which gave the surface an imperfect texture and gave the final piece an edgy quality. This was a risky moved but it paid off. It's interesting that the camera picks up some yellow tones that aren't as visible to the eye. The piece is 10 x 10 inches, and sits proudly atop a chest of drawers in our living room.
